Arson

In California, Penal Code § 451 defines arson as:

The willfully and malicious setting fire to or burns or causes to be burned or who aids, counsels, or procures the burning of, any structure, forest land, or property.

Penalties for arson:

Arson causing Great Bodily Injury is a is a felony that is punishable by a sentence of 5, 7 or 9 years in state prisonCalifornia Penal Code § 451(a)

Arson causing an Inhabited Dwelling to Burn is a felony that is punishable by a sentence of 3, 5 or 8 years in state prisonCalifornia Penal Code § 451(c)

Aggravated Arson is a felony that is punishable by a sentence of 10 years to life in state prisonCalifornia Penal Code § 451.5

Arson caused by Recklessness is a misdemeanor.  California Penal Code § 452

I felony conviction for arson will also cause the defendant to have to register, as a convicted arsonist, with the local police, for the rest of his or her life.
